Ana Pireva is a paper artist. Her paper is not just a basis on which to paint, draw and print -

but rather the material itself from which her pictures (or are they rather forms?) are created. By scooping, colouring and layering, it acquires a wide variety of properties: sometimes translucent, sometimes thick, sometimes monochrome, sometimes gestural.

Many of the works exhibited here were created during Pireva's three-month residency at the Kunstverein Röderhof in the Harz Mountains. In what she describes as an almost timeless environment, she was captivated by the special atmosphere. Pireva describes Röderhof as "a realm of timelessness" and at the same time as a place that could become a refuge from time for her
.

The title of the exhibition comes from the Bulgarian novel of the same name by Georgi Gospodinov from 2020, which deals with people's escape into memories when the future seems hopeless. In her works, Pireva creates such a refuge in time - for herself, and perhaps also for us as viewers - by weaving in traditional symbols and forms of the past, while at the same time emphasising the timelessness of paper as a material all by itself.
