Workshop | Eisengallustinte: vom Naturstoff zur Farbe

Iron gall ink: from natural stoff to colour
The starting point is the gall nut: its formation on the tree, its structure and the content of its stoff. We look at the material in its raw state and analyse what it contains - both chemically and visually. What happens when it is crushed? How does the substance react to water, heat and oxygen? Step by step, we follow the extraction process and observe how a dark, differentiated colour develops from the inconspicuous starting material. The change is comprehensible and concrete: colour is created through reaction. Together we produce an iron gall ink for drawing and writing and test its properties in use. How does it flow? How does it change when it dries? We will also try out the colouring of paper and stoff and compare how different surfaces absorb the pigment. The workshop imparts basic knowledge about materiality and transformation and makes it possible to experience how a natural raw material can be turned into a versatile colour medium through targeted processes.
