Positions and Forms in Dialogue

Fritz Kautge and Maximilian Dussmann

13 December 2024 to 05 January 2025
Exhibition open
Tues - Thurs 2-5 pm (closed over the holidays)

In the exhibition Positions and Forms in Dialogue, works by HfBK students Maximilian Dussmann and Fritz Kautge come together, looking at people themselves on the one hand and their environment on the other. Abstract sculpture and painting enter into a dialogue that explores the relationships between form, space and figure - and highlights the different approaches of the two artists.

An invitation to think about art and different approaches to it; to see positions and forms that we encounter every day - in dialogue.

Maximilian Dussmann presents figurative-abstract paintings and text works. They  are characterised by clear lines and organic forms. In his paintings, he deals with central themes such as expression, relationship issues and composition. In his text works, he critically scrutinises central human experiences. A large part of his practice lies in his antagonistic relationship with digital communication, the ultimate transience of social media and the impact on human interaction, linguistics and

personal and cultural memory. The works form an unmistakable visual metaphor for the rapid ease with which these digital innovations create a superficial human connection that is ultimately alienated from real perception.

Fritz Kautge's abstract paintings and sculptures bring movement to the exhibition. His paintings offer many different forms, making it difficult for visitors to recognise whether they are figures or abstracts. Kautge's works impressively show how space and form are connected. He explores forms and surfaces, which usually dominate the canvas with a floral motif. The structure of the surface usually plays a role in his works, both in paintings and sculptures. Applied in a targeted manner in paintings and often left to the material itself in sculptures, Kautge's works always invite intensive contemplation.
