The exhibition Origins shows paintings by the Vietnamese artist Quang Tran at the Hole of Fame e.V. Dresden from 19 April to 04 May. Tran is a young painter who has been living, studying and working in Dresden since 2019. His work builds a bridge between European  and Vietnamese art, which was characterised in Vietnam in the 20th century, especially by French modernism.

In his painting, Quang Tran refers to the methodology of Vietnamese lacquer painting, in which the application and sanding of several layers creates a special structure and feel in the picture. This approach is subject to the artist's own translation. Quang Tran integrates the 20th-century approach of construction and destruction to a great extent. The metamorphic shift between abstraction and form or chaos and clarity is therefore of the utmost importance for his painting process and a constant component of it. Tran remains true to classical modernism with his impasto application of colour and his motifs. Landscape, nude and still life with Vietnamese water puppets are indispensable models for his painting. Just as abstraction resonates in these motifs, the motifs also resonate in the forms of his abstract paintings.

In the exhibition Origins, the internationality and accessibility of art become clear in a fresh and young example. As a representative of a generation that entered and lives a conscious life in the age of globalisation and networking, Quang Tran is an internationally minded person and does not hesitate, indeed as an artist he is obliged, to reflect this fact in his painting. With his art, Quang Tran not only brings together the two poles of different cultures, but also remains true to traditional painting in both respects.
