Hana Hazem Arabi is a Syrian multidisciplinary artist based in Germany. His artistic practice encompasses painting, installation, performance and video art, and explores themes such as identity, displacement, freedom, the body and the relationship between the individual and society.

In 2019, Arabi began his studies at the Academy of Visual Arts, Leipzig (HGB), where he further developed his cross-media artistic practice. During his studies, he took part in numerous exhibitions and artistic projects in Germany and internationally, including ‘Verletzbare Subjekte’ at the Centre for Contemporary Art in the Citadel, Berlin. In February 2026, he graduated from the HGB Leipzig. His works have been exhibited in Leipzig, Dresden, Berlin and Vienna, amongst other places.

NO DIRECTION is a series of abstract paintings featuring subtle surreal elements that explore the state of disorientation – geographically, psychologically and existentially.

For centuries, people have orientated themselves by the position of the sun, the constellations or the wind. Today, direction is available at all times – digitally calculated, precisely marked and seemingly unambiguous. A quick glance at a smartphone is enough, and the path appears.

But what happens when this system no longer works? When there is no signal, when the sky remains dark and the only guidance is a vague gesture into the unknown?

The series of works arose from a personal experience in which direction no longer meant coordinates, but instinct. Orientation became something fragile – a projection between hope and fear.

In the works, spatial structures dissolve. Forms emerge and vanish again; light breaks through the surface without defining a clear path. Painting itself becomes an act of navigation – between movement and stillness, between control and letting go.

NO DIRECTION is understood less as a geographical narrative than as a reflection on an inner state. The series poses the question of what remains when external systems of orientation fail – and whether the loss of direction holds the possibility of a new, inner orientation.
