“I’ve hidden it somewhere” – Notes on the ‘Charter Year’ 1977
Reading and discussion on the translation of a personal account thought to have been lost, with Jana Krötzsch

On 5 October 2026 marks the 90th anniversary of Václav Havel’s birth. To mark the exhibition ‘Václav Havel – Photographs by Bohdan Holomíček’, the Galerie nEUROPA invites you to a reading and a discussion with the translator Jana Krötzsch.

Together with Susa Wolfrum, Jana Krötzsch has translated into German Havel’s manuscript, which was believed to have been lost and was only published posthumously in the Czech Republic in 2021. Under the title “I’ve hidden it somewhere” – Notes on the ‘Charta Year’ 1977, this text will be published in German for the first time at the end of August by Mitteldeutscher Verlag Halle for the first time in German.

Jana Krötzsch will present the book and also recount the eventful story behind the publication of this gripping literary account.

Václav Havel – Photographs by Bohdan Holomíček

The Galerie nEUROPA run by Kultur Aktiv e.V. is marking Havel’s 90th birthday with an exhibition and a programme of events to commemorate this pioneer of democracy and human rights in East Central Europe – a staunch European who, as President, also championed German-Czech reconciliation with great vigour.

Bohdan Holomíček’s photographs are characterised by closeness and a strong sense of intimacy. They reveal far more of Havel’s human greatness than official tributes ever could. The photographer does not see Havel primarily as a dissident, writer or president. Holomíček portrays Václav Havel as a human being.
