Jens Hunger „Hier finden wir wenigstens etwas Obst!“
12.01.2024 — 09.02.2024
In his works, the artist Jens Hunger provides an insight into his perspective on a seemingly confused and sometimes threatening outside world, but also on everyday scenes and bizarre fantasies. This artistic exploration began with comics and collages, but for some years now he has been creating oil paintings on canvas, cotton and paper. He uses a pictorial language consisting of elements of classical painting and formal languages of the 20th and 21st centuries. A mixture of fantastic and realistic pictorial elements merge to form his own expression. In doing so, he attempts to fathom and depict the unreal and dreamlike as well as the depths of the unconscious. A resolution of seemingly contradictory states and situations can often be observed. The elements of colour, dynamism and emotion can be found in almost all of his works. The viewer discovers a multitude of positions that have an effect on him and that he can interpret for himself. It is an attempt to embed the marvellous, but also the frightening, in banal or sometimes grotesque scenes. Occasionally, everyday scenes are also used as a surface for reflection. Sometimes eruptive, but also restrained means of expression such as a vital application of colour or a simplified design can be observed. In contrast to this, the finest, richly detailed, formulated event landscapes can be seen time and again. The telling of playful stories competes with the depiction of the horrors of the world. In addition to intense oil paintings, he creates high-contrast ink and pencil drawings on paper. Most of the works are created in a lengthy process, sometimes lasting several years, in which individual sections are formulated.
