Two young female artists have been invited to take part in HANDLUNGsRAUM 2026 at ‘galerie drei’ in Dresden. Once again this year, they will be using the gallery as an open studio. The aim is once more to offer an artistic outreach programme, making the processes of artistic and conceptual work accessible to the public to foster a better understanding.

Karen Kamiya (Japan) and Valeriya Krasnova (Belarus) have something in common: Both came to Dresden from their countries of birth – and thus from different cultural backgrounds – to study art at the HfBK Dresden, from which they successfully graduated a year ago with a diploma and master student qualification. They currently live and work in Dresden and are already involved in various exhibitions and projects, thereby acting as bridge-builders between cultures and nations.

They view the HANDLUNGsRAUM 2026 project as a working residency that explores the concept of ‘Handlungsraum’ as a central artistic concept. By “space for action”, they do not mean a mere venue for presentation, but an active space for experience and encounter that emerges through action, interaction and communication. Space is understood as a dynamic structure that is shaped, in part, by participation. Visitors are not passive observers, but active participants who are invited to contribute their perspectives, memories and experiences. The focus is on the question of how everyday spaces and seemingly unremarkable elements – furniture, fabrics, colours, wall surfaces, smells or signs of wear – shape our cultural identity and our memories. Fleeting impressions – such as the lingering memory of an afternoon nap in a living room with floral wallpaper, a gentle breeze rustling the curtains, a scratch on a wooden cupboard door or a collection of small fruit labels – often linger in the subconscious and resurface unexpectedly. The project is dedicated to such mental spaces – places that are no longer physically accessible but continue to exist in memory. These individual points of reference interweave with the visitors’ memories to form a multi-layered, collectively experienced space of memory.

Visitors can view, discuss and engage with the work of the two artists during the opening hours listed here.

On Saturday, 15 August 2026, at 6.00 pm, there will be a presentation, during which the artists will outline their artistic motivations and themes and engage with those present in a concluding discussion and, thereby, an exchange of ideas.
