George Rush – Night Watch
11.04.2024 — 04.05.2024
Vernissage: Thu., 11 Apr. → 7 p.m.
Opening: Thu., 11 Apr. → 7 p.m.
EN: In his exhibition "Night Watch", the US-American artist George Rush shows us nocturnal scenes: House facades, illuminated windows, graffiti on the walls and deserted streets. At the latest, the odd shop sign reveals that you are looking at Dresden Neustadt. The paintings, all in the same portrait format, show Dresden Neustadt from an unusual perspective: that of a quasi-neutral outsider. With his trained eyes, George Rush captures snapshots on the canvas like snapshots from a mobile phone camera, which most people living here would probably not have noticed in passing. The interior of a flat is also depicted. Inconspicuous furnishings are emphasised in the same ghostly way as the buildings. The only human figure we encounter is a shadow on the wall. The shortening days of the onset of the second Covid-19 winter created these deserted scenes, not the artist's imagination.
His work as a professor of painting and drawing at Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, led Rush to Dresden in October and November 2021 through the exchange and residency programme of the Greater Columbus Arts Council together with the Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, where he captured the scenes. They are now being presented for the first time in their entirety and in the presence of the artist.

ENG: In his exhibition "Night Watch," the American artist George Rush presents nocturnal scenes: building facades, illuminated windows, graffiti on walls, and deserted streets. Only the presence of a few details like a store sign confirm that the viewer is looking at Dresden's Neustadt. The paintings, all in the same portrait orientation, offer a unique perspective of the popular district: that of a quasi-neutral outsider. George Rush captures perspectives which most locals would overlook like snapshots taken by a cellphone camera. Other paintings depict the interior of a flat. Inconspicuous furnishings are highlighted in the same eerie manner as the buildings in the street. The only human figure encountered is a shadow on the wall. These empty scenes were not conjured by the artist's imagination but were created by the diminishing days of the encroaching second Covid-19 winter.
