Eröffnung: Ines De Nil. We Exist.
27.03.2026 — 28.03.2026
Welcome to the OPENING of the exhibition
Ines De Nil. We Exist.
on Friday, 27 March 2026, 7-10 pm at the FOTOFORUM DRESDEN at the newly renovated Kracht fountain, Neustädter Markt 12.
Ines De Nil is a photographer and filmmaker who portrayed the queer autonomous scene in the late 1980s and 1990s. So far, only part of her extensive life's work has been shown publicly. With her works, she operates at the interface between documentary testimony and artistic photography. They open up insights into spaces of intimacy and self-expression that were and are of central importance for the development of a visible queer culture.
Many of these spaces and people are barely documented today, either for reasons of self-protection or because the events of the time were considered too remote or niche. In the midst of these events, Ines De Nil built real relationships with the people she photographed. Her work followed a simple principle: to show people as they wanted to be seen, which enabled her to depict the immediate and undisguised queer life.
The result is photographs full of sex- and body-positive imagery, characterised by shared community and mutual respect. None of the people portrayed appeared disguised or alienated; rather, they exist in their own authenticity and beauty - visible and self-determined.
Because this was a central concern of the artist:
"I always wanted to show people as they wanted to show themselves."
Ines De Nil, born in 1947, has lived in Dresden since 2024. Vinzenz Damm has been exploring her photographic work since 2025, producing and curating the exhibition taking place at FOTOFORUM DRESDEN.
