Dorothée Billard lives and works in Berlin and Dresden. She has been teaching at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts since 2016.

Water is a recurring theme in her drawings, as are questions of forces, transformations and states of matter. Her water drawings do not arise from direct observation, but take shape on the paper through the interplay of line, surface and volume.

The focus is on the connection between gazing at paper and gazing at water: a moment of anticipation regarding a surface that reveals its depth only at the moment of observation.
