Changing States
28.08.2026 — 17.10.2026
YVONNE ENGELHARDT and SASHA SHEVCHENKO
Opening: Fri 28 Aug 2026, 6.00 pm
Introduction: Anna-Lena Werner
Artist Talk + Guided Tour: Sat 29 Aug 2026, 12 noon
In their artistic work, Yvonne Engelhardt and Sasha Shevchenko explore how migration has an impact beyond the moment of relocating – how it becomes inscribed in bodies, materials, rituals and notions of origin, passing on fragmentary knowledge and perpetuating it across generations.
Changing States denotes a process of translation: inherited experiences are transformed into narratives, images, materials and spatial situations. The title refers to crossings – the crossing of territorial borders, and states of physical and emotional liminality. It describes how identity and memory change form as they are passed on across countries and generations. The exhibition brings together two artistic approaches that draw on Ukrainian and diaspora family histories and experiences. (Anna-Lena Werner)
Whilst @Yvonne Engelhardt explores her own family history artistically, drawing on a sea voyage to the USA and Toronto undertaken in 2025, @Sasha Shevchenko, who lives in Toronto and London, transforms collective memories and cultural traditions from Ukraine into poetic and mythological visual worlds; the exhibition brings together painting, risography and installation works, and also presents the launch of Yvonne Engelhardt’s artist’s book Fallende Wasser.
The exhibition is supported by the @City of Dresden, the @Cultural Foundation of the Free State of Saxony, the Ostsächsische Sparkasse Dresden, the Hermann-Ilgen Foundation and the patrons of the Förderverein der Galerie Ursula Walter e.V.
