It was not until the 1970s that colour photography finally established itself as a form of artistic expression. One of the West German pioneers of a new colour aesthetic was Erwin Fieger (1928-2013), whose illustrated books set international standards. In the GDR, Wolfgang G. Schröter (1928-2012) succeeded in opening up the boundaries of artistic colour photography for applied, avant-garde and commissioned photography with his experimental photographs for industry. The advertising photographer Reinhart Wolf (1930-1988) became famous for his photo book Faces of Buildings about New York skyscraper facades, which he shows in large format as a subtle interplay of light and colour.
