AUDIOVISUELLE INSTALLATION ,,THE ILLESTRATED ALBUM
Gunther Schumann

The Illestrated Album is a project by the Leipzig-based artist Gunther Schumann, alias Illestrator, which combines painting, music and digital animation to create an interactive audiovisual installation. Fourteen paintings and illustrations from the album project “Richtige Kunst” are brought to life using 2D and 3D animation and are being presented for the first time as part of a solo exhibition at the Geh8 Gallery.

The starting point is the concept of the virtual band: digital characters expand upon the traditional live performance and open up new ways for the audience, music and imagery to interact. Whilst virtual concerts have gained particular significance during the pandemic, the project explores how digital and analogue spaces of experience can be meaningfully combined today.

Visitors can control the individual animations themselves via a MIDI controller, thereby actively intervening in the audiovisual experience. In addition, selected works are animated via the augmented reality platform Artivive and can be experienced directly on the paintings using a smartphone. The project is conceived as artistic research at the interface of illustration, music, animation and immersive media technologies.
