FLUFF Alexandra Müller

"Fluff" refers to something light and has different meanings depending on the context. In everyday life, it often refers to something soft, such as cotton wool or loose materials. In literature and fan culture, "fluff" usually describes stories or content that are emotionally light and carefree. In gaming and pop culture, on the other hand, "fluff" stands for the background story or narrative universe of a game that describes the world and its characters.

A good term to capture the complexity of Alexandra Müller s work in one word. The Dresden-based artist specialises in pencil drawing and working with wool. Her drawings draw on a wide range of influences, including myths, medical graphics, typography, pop culture, film and science fiction. These elements interweave in her works to create a mysterious universe in which reality and fantasy merge. Humorous and whimsical, she creates multi-layered visual worlds in which graphic and narrative levels intertwine and enigmatic stories unfold.

Alexandra Müller always takes the position of the observer and provides fleeting glimpses into the lives of strangers. Their activities, escapades and idiosyncrasies are depicted in the drawings, while the tapestry frames the scene and creates a distance between the observer and those depicted. This play with proximity and distance is a reflection on the unconscious human habit of observing others and surmising their stories from a few details. In addition to drawing, Müller has been working with wool and textiles for several years. What originally began as a way of utilising scraps of wool has developed into an independent form of artistic expression. She uses wool to create sculptures, reliefs and tapestries, which complement her graphic works in unexpected ways and lend them additional dimensions. Alexandra Müller's work has been shaped by numerous residencies, including in Coventry, Hamburg and Wroclaw, where she was able to further develop her artistic practice and integrate new influences into her work.
