In 2019, Austrian photographer Kurt Hörbst won 2nd prize at the PORTRAITS - Hellerau Photography Awards with his life-size "People Scans" (https://people-scans.com/). For these works, the artist set up a scanner box at various locations (Sunderpur, Vienna, Venice, Clervaux, Dresden) in which the horizontally lying models were "scanned". The life-size prints raise questions about the truthfulness and perception of portraits, about (auto)fiction and reality, and ultimately about the relationship of trust between model, photographer and viewer.
In the new exhibition, the large-format "People Scans" from the Hellerau PORTRAITS archive are contrasted with hundreds and hundreds of small-format portraits from the nine previous years of the PORTRAITS exhibition catalogues (2016-2024). With this small "archive of moments", the Fotoforum, opposite the Archive of 20th Century Avant-Garde Photography in the Blockhaus, presents a multifaceted overview of international portrait photography at the beginning of the 21st century: From documentary portrait works centred around current issues and their protagonists (homeland and displacement, environmental destruction, climate change, war, pandemic...) to mixed-media works, collages, nude photographs, re-enactments and AI-generated works, as well as autobiographical or autofictional long-term series, artistic and technical experiments. With this colourful cross-section, editorially selected, arranged and hung by members of the Forum für zeitgenössische Fotografie Dresden e.V., we are celebrating the start of the upcoming tenth anniversaries of the Fotoforum Dresden and the PORTRAITS - Hellerau Photography Awards.
