“The massphase includes the goal, by a calorie surplus (paired with targeted training) and at the same time the lowest possible body fat structure to provide the body with sufficient building material for muscle growth.” What was taken from the Wikipedia article on “bodybuilding”, can be transferred to the Group exhibition of the four artists from Düsseldorf, who are invited to visit the Schimmel Projects – Art Centre Dresden in August: Before the so – called “definition phase” can begin, mass must first be built up, (the body ‘s own) material, which are all body’s should be formed with.

The artists understand their work, which are created especially for this exhibition, as a concentrated structure building up the body of the exhibition, in which the four different positions constantly increase and condense each other. Without losing the formation of the whole, the individual may sometimes act massively or even growing. “Mass” should not be understood as an unmanageable accumulation of unstructured material, but as clearly defined volumes and surfaces that build up with space and in time.

Köver, Krabbe, Rempel and Sasse know each other from studying at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where they are currently studying, and have already exhibited in changing formations over the past three years. They exhibited in Düsseldorf, Wuppertal, San Francisco or Palermo, but never in this constellation. You can see paintings, sculptures and installations, which shows the “Massephase” in different ways.

We would like to thank the Kunst- und Kulturstiftung der Stadtsparkasse Düsseldorf, Amt für Kultur und Denkmalschutz Dresden, Netzwerk Kreativ and Freundeskreis der HfBK Dresden for the support of the exhibition.
